As a result of Russian shelling on the night of May 14, consequences including fatalities, dozens of civilian casualties, and widespread destruction have been reported in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, Odesa, Poltava, and Donetsk regions, according to the oblasts’ military administrations and the State Emergency Service (SES).
Rescuers searched for people under the rubble of an apartment building in Kyiv, which partially collapsed in the Russian attacksUkrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said it was an “especially difficult night for Kyiv,” where rescuers are searching through the rubble of a residential building after a combined missile and drone attack on Kyiv. A search and rescue operation began early on May 14 to look for people under the rubble of a nine-story apartment block, which had been hit overnight.
According to Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klychko, who visited the building in the Darnytskyi District, 18 apartments had been destroyed. He also said the attack had disrupted the city’s water supply. At least 44 people have been injured, including two children, the Kyiv mayor stated. Some 31 of those are being treated in the hospital.
President Volodomyr Zelenskyy said dozens had been rescued from the building so far, while damage had also been done to other residential buildings, a school, a veterinary clinic, and other infrastructure.
“Emergency response operations are currently ongoing in the Obolonskyi, Darnytskyi, and Holosiivskyi Districts,” Pavlo Petrov, spokesperson for the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Kyiv, told the national joint 24/7 newscast.
As of 12:00 on 14 May, four people are known to have been killed and forty injured, including a one-month-old baby, in a Russian combined missile and drone attack on Kyiv. Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs has reported that more than 10 people are still missing.
At about 1:00 p.m., Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, reported that the death toll in Kyiv had risen to five.
Two more people were injured due to Russian strikes in the Odesa Oblast. In the Chernihiv and Poltava Oblasts, Russian attacks resulted in destruction, leaving some residents without electricity.
Zelenskyy said that the overnight barrage saw more than 670 drones and 56 missiles launched across the country. This is among the largest attacks Russia has mounted since the start of its full-scale invasion in 2022.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin for the “barbaric attack”, which he said showed Moscow was pursuing “aggression and terror” over peace. He also noted that the attack had occurred during a crucial summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, and urged the two leaders to exert pressure on Russia.
“I am certain that the leaders of the United States and China have enough leverage over Moscow to tell Putin to finally end the war,” he said.
ZMINA previously reported that Russia killed nine people on May 12.
Six more people were killed in another major attack on May 13, which Ukraine’s saw 892 drones launched from Russia.
