On December 19th Simferopol Kyiv District Court, under the control of Russia, refused to provide copies of the conclusion of linguistic examination to the lawyers of Ilmi Umerov, Deputy Chairman of Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, on his case.

As reported by Krym.Realiyi.

According to Emil Kurbedinov, Umerov’s lawyer, both investigation and prosecution failed to conclusively prove why the defense was not allowed to read the document.

CPC (criminal procedure code) does not prohibit for investigator to issue copies of the examination. We believe that it significantly violates the right of Ilmi Umerov for defense. All of this is supposed to create at least some obstacles. It has become an established practice in Crimea”, – said Kurbedinov.

Linguistic expertise is the main argument of the prosecution in the case Ilmi Umerov.

According to lawyer, the court has engaged in “groundless harassment” of defenders.

“We wouldn’t go through all these trials, since we already know the results. But it is required in order to interpose an appeal in the ECHR (European Court of Human Rights) and other international authorities in the future,” – said Kurbedinov.

As a reminder, on December 16th Ilmi Umerov, Deputy Chairman of Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, was summoned to the FSB, where he was informed about the pre-prosecutorial investigation based on a video tape record. Later Umerov published this video.

On May 12th Natalia Poklonskaya, former prosecutor of Crimea, informed that FSB investigators have opened a criminal case against Ilmi Umerov under the article of extremism.

Detention, searches and criminal prosecution, detention in a psychiatric hospital for involuntary forensic psychiatric examination of Ilmi Umerov, renowned participant of national liberation movement of Crimean Tatars and Deputy Chairman of Mejlis, created considerable public and international resonance.
