Ukrainian journalists in Russian captivity received RAW in WAR award
This year, Ukrainian and Russian women journalists held in Russian captivity have received the international RAW in WAR Anna Politkovskaya Award. The recipients include Anastasiia Hlukhovska, Iryna Levchenko and Yana Suvorova, RIA-Pivden journalists associated with Melitopol, as well as Iryna Danylovych. RAW in WAR also made special mention of Viktoriia Roshchyna, a Ukrainian journalist who died in Russian captivity.

The award committee said it was impressed by the courage and integrity of the journalists, who risk their freedom and their lives to report on war, human rights violations and war crimes. RAW in WAR’s organisers called on Russia to release the imprisoned journalists immediately and unconditionally and to hold those responsible for torture to account.
“Seeing Anastasiia Hlukhovska’s name on this list means a great deal to our team. Our colleague has been deprived of her liberty for more than three years. We continue to speak out about Nastia and demand her release”, RIA-Pivden said.
August 2026 marked three years since Anastasiia Hlukhovska was taken into Russian captivity. She has had no contact with her family throughout that time.
The RAW in WAR Anna Politkovskaya Award honours women journalists working amid war, repression and other dangerous conditions.
ZMINA previously reported that a Russian-controlled court had upheld the 15-year prison sentence imposed on Iryna Levchenko, a journalist from Melitopol convicted of “espionage” in Russia. The court rejected her defence team’s appeal.
Other prisoners regularly threaten to kill Iryna Danylovych, a Crimean journalist and human rights defender held at women’s penal colony No. 7 in Zelenokumsk, Russia’s Stavropol Krai.
