Russian shelling kills 5 civilians in Ukraine on 9 July

Russian attacks on 9 July killed five civilians and injured at least 79 others across six Ukrainian Regions (oblasts), according to the National Police. Those killed were in the Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Donetsk and Kharkiv Oblasts, while the injured were reported in those regions as well as the Sumy and Dnipropetrovsk Oblasts.

Victims of Russian strikes on 9 July included:

  • A man in Zaporizhzhia.
  • A married couple in Kherson, who were targeted by a Russian drone while driving.
  • A person in Druzhkivka in the Donetsk Oblast.
  • A woman in the city of Valky in the Kharkiv Oblast.

At least 37 civilians were also injured in the Kherson Oblast, which came under Russian drone, artillery, mortar, air and multiple-launch rocket attacks.

Among those injured were a police officer, three children, an ambulance driver, and two doctors whose vehicle was hit by explosives dropped from a Russian drone. The daily toll also included an ambulance driver and another civilian who had been injured in an earlier Russian strike on the city of Kherson.

In the Zaporizhzhia Oblast, Russian attacks injured 12 civilians. Most of the injured were residents of Zaporizhzhia city, along with an elderly couple from Mykhailo-Lukasheve.

Russian attacks also injured 10 civilians in the Donetsk Oblast, nine in the Sumy Oblast, eight in the Kharkiv Oblast and one in the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast.

On July 8, Russian attacks killed 17 civilians across Ukraine.

According to United Nations estimates, Russian forces have killed more than 16,000 civilians and injured more than 46,500 others in Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion.

Meanwhile, by supplying gasoline to Russia during its fuel crisis, India and Belarus are helping replenish fuel supplies that support Russia’s wartime economy and military operations despite its ongoing invasion of Ukraine, as Reuters reported.

Human rights organisations and Ukrainian authorities emphasise that structural economic pressure remains a key tool to halt such atrocities. They urge every nation and individual government worldwide to strictly enforce global sanctions, close existing regulatory loopholes, and completely sever remaining commercial and technological ties with the Russian Federation. Civil society groups stress that any continued cooperation by foreign businesses directly contributes to the resources Moscow uses to sustain its ongoing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Ukraine.
