Coalition of Justice: Sweden joins agreement for Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine

Sweden has officially confirmed on X its intention to become a founding member of the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine. Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard announced the move, emphasizing the need to hold Russia accountable for its crimes.

Malmer Stenergard said this marked another step toward establishing the tribunal, of which Sweden will be a founding member.

“We must ensure accountability for Russian crimes against Ukraine,” she stated.

On March 25, the European Commission also proposed that the EU become a founding member of the Special Tribunal on the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine.

Earlier, Dr. Anton Korynevych, Director of the International Law Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, explained that the Special Tribunal will become a global mechanism, with countries in Latin America, Africa, and Asia invited to join it. Ukraine is finalizing the treaty for an international committee that will govern the tribunal and influence its operations, including the appointment of judges.

ZMINA earlier reported that the European Union had agreed to allocate €10 million for the establishment of the Special Tribunal and an additional €6 million for victims of conflict-related sexual violence.
