Ukraine’s Prosecutor General, Andrii Kostin, has stated that the Ukrainian soldier beheaded by the Russians in Donetsk Oblast has been identified, as have the Russian commanders responsible for this war crime.

“As regards the investigation into the brutal murder of a Ukrainian defender in Donetsk Oblast, which was reported yesterday, the deceased has been identified. We cannot disclose his name at present, as procedures are underway to confirm his identity,” he wrote.

The prosecutor general noted that Russian commanders responsible for the beheading of the Ukrainian defender have also been identified.

“A set of measures is being taken to verify this information,” the prosecutor general said.

The Ukrainska Pravda news outlet has obtained a recording of an intercepted conversation in which a Russian commander orders his subordinates to behead a Ukrainian soldier in Donetsk Oblast.

Kostin added that this incident serves as another proof of Russia’s state policy of disregarding international law and universal morality.

By way of background, from February 24, 2022, to May 2024, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights recorded 32,989 civilian casualties in the country: 11,126 killed and 21,863 injured. The UN emphasizes that the actual losses are much higher.

Prosecutor General of Ukraine, Andrii Kostin, has stated that members of law enforcement agencies have documented almost 130,000 Russian war crimes against Ukraine. He added that means that, on average, Russia is committing a war crime every 10 minutes.

As for now, it is impossible to determine the exact number of casualties, as Ukrainian law enforcement agencies and the representatives of the ICC have no access to the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.

Previously, Volodymyr Zelenskyy appealed to world leaders who are still not on board with the Global Peace Summit to join the collective effort. He called on them to show leadership in advancing real peace, not just a pause between strikes.

Zelenskyy expressed confidence that the efforts of the global majority are the best guarantee that all commitments will be fulfilled.

The Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Oleksandr Lytvynenko, stated Ukraine realises the war will end with negotiations. Therefore, it is preparing and promoting President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s peace formula.
