Savchenko Remanded in Custody until May 13th
The Moscow City Court upheld the detention of Ukrainian pilot, PACE Delegate, and People’s Deputy Nadiya Savchenko until May 13th.
This was announced by her lawyer, Nikolay Polozov, through his Twitter account.
The investigation was obligated to request information from the Russian Foreign Ministry about the status of her international immunity as a delegate to the PACE, but never did, said Polozov.
In addition to previous charges of involvement in the murder of Russian journalists in the Luhansk region and illegally crossing the border with Russia, a new accusation has been added to her list of charges.
Her other lawyer, Mark Feygin, wrote on his Twitter page that a new charge has been brought against Savchenko based on Art. 356 part 1 of the Russian Criminal Code: cruel treatment of prisoners of war or civilians, deportation of civilian populations, plunder of national property in occupied territories, and use, in a military conflict, of means and methods of warfare banned by an international treaty of the Russian Federation.
The article provides for imprisonment for a term of up to 20 years. Feygin was denied a complaint on the fabricated charges.
Savchenko participated in the hearing via video. “It is clear that participation is not easy for her. She often puts her head on the table,” said Feygin.
Nadiya Savchenko has been on hunger strike for 75 days in protest against her illegal detention. Yesterday, a leader of the Crimean Tatar people, Mustafa Dzhemilev, urged Savchenko to stop the hunger strike. According to him, it makes no more sense as “Russia is not a country with human principles.”
