Crimean court refuses to dismiss case against Deputy Mejlis Chairman Umerov

The Simferopol district court in the occupied Crimea has dismissed the complaint of Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of Crimean Tatar People Ilmi Umerov about the order to institute criminal proceedings against him.

This is reported with by Crimea.Realities portal with reference to Umerov’s lawyer Emil Kurbedinov.

According to him, the defense pointed to a number of violations of their client’s rights.

The investigation has not indicated all the information about Ilmi Umerov, namely that he is a citizen of Ukraine. We believe it is a significant breach. The investigation refused to indicate that, and considered that it can choose between two citizenships,” the lawyer said.

According to him, there is also a number of errors in the order.

We pointed out that when serving this order to Umerov, his rights were not clarified, namely the right to appeal, and so on,” Kurbedinov said.

May 12, the Russian Federal Security Service in Crimea initiated the criminal case under Article 280.1 against Umerov for his statements made on the air of ATR Crimean Tatar TV channel.

Umerov said his words had been incorrectly translated in the broadcast.

Umerov gave the written undertaking not to leave the town. Mark Feygin, who was previously a lawyer of Ukrainian MP Nadiya Savchenko, has led the Umerov’s defense.
