UK tells TikTok to remove videos glorifying dangerous driving

The British government has told TikTok and other social media companies to remove content featuring a social media trend in which people drive the wrong way down roads.

The UK Defence Minister Luke Pollard told the BBC World Service that he wanted the platforms to step up and demonstrate they could police themselves. He said the content celebrated dangerous behaviour on roads.

“If you have content online that celebrates this dangerous behaviour, driving on the wrong side of the road, turning your lights off while driving at speed at night, it encourages other people to do so as well. And on social media, the way the algorithms work is it spools up controversial content, it serves it to more people. The social media companies benefit from that,” he said.

TikTok has previously said it was removing videos and accounts that broke its rules.
