Leader of illegal pro-Russian armed formation of Donetsk region Alexander Zakharchenko describes the execution as “the highest measure of protection of society.”

News of Donbas online media outlet reports this.

Many countries have capital punishment as the ultimate measure of protection of society. The execution of sentence is another question. Russia, for example, joined the moratorium on capital punishment. The United States have refused to do it, and the death penalty exists in the US,” he said.

“Unfortunately, we will not be able to defeat crime completely. The crime has always been and will be. But the power of the state lies in the ability to neutralize the criminals and to prevent the crime. The death sentence is delivered by the court: we find the offender, neutralize, pass the sentence. Anyone sentenced to death has the right to file a petition for clemency, and I personally will consider each individual case,” he added.

Earlier, the Russian media reported on the first sentence passed by the Donetsk illegal formations. The pro-Russian separatists claim that their “military tribunal” is considering 46 criminal cases.

Ukrainian President’s Commissioner for peaceful settlement of the situation in Donbas Iryna Herashchenko reported in early February that the illegal formations planned to apply the Criminal Code of the USSR to the captives. It provides for the death penalty and the concentration camps.
