In Crimea scientist from Yalta Guriy Kornilyev, who refused to receive Russian passport, was summoned to the FSB “for a conversation”.

As reported by Crimean Human Rights Group on their Facebook page.

“On Monday on February 27, I had an unusual event at 10 am: I was summoned to the Border Department of the FSB in Simferopol (Fedotova Street 27) “to answer some questions”. They have not explained the reasons for summon and even refused to introduce themselves (“not a telephone conversation”)”, – he said.

According to human rights defenders, in 2014 Kornilyev openly expressed his pro-Ukrainian position. He refused to receive Russian citizenship and received residence permit to live in Crimea.

“Once at his work found out that Kornilyev does not have Russian passport he was repeatedly asked to withdraw the statement to renounce Russian citizenship and, on August 8, 2016, Guriy Kornilyev, the candidate of biological sciences, was fired from the Nikitsky Botanical Garden. After publication of the article by Crimean Human Rights Group, Kornilyev was offered a job on the mainland Ukraine, but currently Guriy cannot leave the peninsula due to family reasons. Kornilyev’s elderly mother is living in the Crimea and cannot leave her”, – said in the statement of the Crimean Human Rights Group.

Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has officially announced the February 20, 2014, as the beginning of the temporary occupation of the Crimea and Sevastopol by the Russian Federation. On October 7, 2015, Petro Poroshenko, the President of Ukraine, signed the corresponding law. Key international organizations, including the UN General Assembly, condemned Russia’s actions and called the occupation and annexation of Crimea as illegal. Economic sanctions were imposed against the Russian Federation. Russia denies the occupation of the peninsula and calls it a “restoration of historical justice”.
