Ukrainians adopt more children than foreigners do
Adoption is considered to be the best way of settlement in a family.
As the website of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights reports, Aksana Filipishyna, the Commissioner’s representative for the rights of the child, non-discrimination and gender equality, stated this in the Voice of the capital radio program.
Thus, the Kyiv city statistics show that Kyiv resident adopted 64 orphans and children deprived of parental care, while foreigners adopted 13 such children in 2013. In 2014, Kyiv residents adopted 76 orphans, while foreigners adopted nine. For six months in 2015, these figures are 50 and four respectively.
Filipishyna noted that the number of adopted children decreased every year. However, this should not be regarded as a negative factor, as the total number of orphans in the country is lowering each year. For example, it has decreased by more than 10,000 people just over the last three years.
Aksana Filipishyna also recalled that the national legislation of Ukraine and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child adoption had recognized adoption to be the best form of settlement in a family for orphans and children deprived of parental care.
As a reminder, Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Valeria Lutkovska reported that the orphaned children had been in danger because of the conflict in eastern Ukraine. The institutions for orphans, located in the areas not controlled by the government of Ukraine, lack constant telephone communication, have problems with medicines, and get food from the locals.
