Ukrainian energy company films ‘Shchedryk’ in Russian-bombed power plant to call on world for infrastructure protection
The DTEK energy company filmed a Christmas musical performance, “Shchedryk,” in the machine hall of a thermal power plant (TPP) that was destroyed by Russian attacks, and called on the world to strengthen the protection of Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
“We filmed a Christmas musical performance ‘Shchedryk’ in the machine hall of a thermal power plant destroyed by Russian attacks,” the company’s statement reads.
“This is a public appeal by DTEK to international partners with a call to strengthen support for the recovery and protection of Ukrainian energy infrastructure. We will be grateful for the dissemination of this appeal,” DTEK noted.
To provide background, since October 2022, the Russian military has destroyed the majority of electricity generation through shelling, and the latest strikes were directed at facilities responsible, among other things, for electricity transmission. Experts say that repairing the consequences of the recent attacks may take from 10 to 12 weeks, not taking into account the new Russian shelling that occurs daily.
The Office of the Prosecutor General considers such attacks as a component of genocide, and the UN does not rule out that they could be a crime against humanity. The International Criminal Court has already issued the first arrest warrants for those responsible for the shelling.
The OSCE and the UN have already spoken about the threat of a blackout in Ukraine in 2025, and they do not rule out strikes on NPPs either.
