The woman, who became the victim of the racist incident, got social assistance and her child was registered as the citizen of Ukraine.

As the website of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights reports, 23-year-old dark-skinned woman Asi from Sierra Leone suffered during the racist incident in May this year: the residents of Uzhgorod did not allow her and her child to enter the city route taxi and called the police. The law enforcement officers kept her handcuffed for about an hour.

Pending the status, Asi and her child live in the temporary accommodation center for refugees in the town of Perechyn. The immigrant, who left the country due to difficult political situation, did not know for long time that she had the right to social assistance in Ukraine. No social worker had provided her with such information, so she was forced to beg alms.

After the Ombudsperson’s coordinator in Zakarpattia region Oleh Hryhoriev had intervened into the situation, the necessary documents for assistance were gathered.

“Six weeks later, the monthly cash assistance was appointed to the young mother and one-time assistance in the amount of UAH 20,000 was paid. In addition, her 10-month-old son, Volodymyr, was registered as the citizen of Ukraine and issued the passport of citizen of Ukraine for traveling abroad,” reads the statement.

The representative of the Ombudsperson noted that the systematic work on social adaptation of the refugees and the foreigners staying in the territory of Ukraine almost had not been carried in the temporary accommodation center for refugees in Perechyn.
