To provide background, on May 5, Russia killed 26 civilians in Ukraine, with more than 150 people injured, according to the National Police. ZMINA notes that these casualty data from May 5 are based on the regional reports by the National Police of Ukraine. Meanwhile, the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (HRMMU) stated that 28 people were reportedly killed and 194 injured on 5 May alone in a wave of attacks by the Russian Federation, bringing the reported civilian toll across Ukraine since 1 May to at least 70 killed and more than 500 injured.
Analysts suggest that the high number of casualties may be due to Russia’s tactic of more actively shelling crowds at times when many civilians are engaged in their daily routines.
Meanwhile, Moscow broke the ceasefire that Ukraine had introduced.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his evening address that Ukraine proposed a ceasefire to Russia – and this is far from the first such proposal.
“This time, it was a ceasefire starting from May 6. Ukraine was ready to ensure complete silence, but in response to this peaceful proposal of ours, there have only been new Russian strikes and new threats from Russia,” the President of Ukraine stated.
He noted that Russia “wants permission to hold their parade, to come out to the square safely for an hour once a year, and then to go on killing our people and waging war”.
“The Russians are already talking about strikes after May 9. The strange and clearly insane logic of the Russian leadership. We have also received communications from some states close to Russia saying that their representatives intend to be in Moscow. A strange desire… at this time. We don’t recommend it,” the head of Ukrainian state adviced.
