Russian serviceman Chingiz Atantaev was sentenced in absentia for torturing civilians in Andriivka, Kyiv region
The Sudovyi Reporter news outlet reported that the Makariv District Court of the Kyiv Oblast found a Russian serviceman guilty in absentia of violating the laws and customs of war for torturing civilians in the village of Andriivka in 2022.
A photo of the convict released by investigators and a photo of Chyngyz Atantayev found by journalists from the Important Stories news outletLaw enforcement officers did not release the convict’s name; however, Chingiz Atantaev is easily identifiable from the photos they published. Last year, he and another Russian soldier, Daniil Frolkin, were charged with the murder and robbery of civilians in the Kyiv region.
The verdict against the Russians concerns events from February and March 2022, when part of the Kyiv Oblast was under temporary occupation. The convict, along with other soldiers, was in Andriivka, where witnesses said they went from house to house, checking on local residents.
Chingiz Atantayev was charged in absentia with threatening to kill at least two civilians. He promised to shoot a man with an automatic rifle in front of his family in February and threatened to kill the female owner of another home in March.
The victim testified in court that the Russian soldier asked if there were weapons in the house or if Ukrainian soldiers were hiding there. Victims identified the convict from photographs.
Atantayev was sentenced in absentia to 11 years in prison.
Earlier, ZMINA reported that a Russian OMON officer, Sergey Veikkolaynen, whom investigators accuse of ordering the killing of civilians in the Kyiv region, was served a new notice of suspicion for holding people in a refrigerator.
To provide background, the occupation of part of the Kyiv Oblast by Russian forces lasted from February 24 to early April 2022. After the de-occupation, police discovered 1,590 bodies, 208 of which belonged to military and law enforcement personnel.
The Kyiv region is one of the areas where the highest number of cases of sexual violence committed by Russian soldiers has been recorded. The majority of known victims are women who were home alone.
