Seventeen killed, dozens wounded in overnight Russian strike on Kyiv and surrounding region
Russian military strikes overnight into August 5, 2026, killed 17 civilians and wounded more than 50 others in Kyiv and the Kyiv region, according to the State Emergency Service, the National Police, the regional military administration and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The Air Force of Ukraine reported that Russia had launched 24 ballistic missiles and four anti-ship missiles during the attack on Ukraine’s capital. Russians also launched 115 drones during the attack, and air defence systems intercepted 98 of them.
The Russian defence ministry stated it had struck logistics hubs and supply centres in Kyiv and the surrounding region.
“These centres were involved in the storage, delivery of various weapons and military supplies, as well as in the production and distribution of unmanned aerial vehicles,” it said. It also stated it had hit three cargo vessels “which were transporting weapons and military equipment” near the Black Sea port of Odesa, without providing evidence for that.

Fires broke out, and buildings were destroyed across Kyiv’s Obolonskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Holosiivskyi and Desnianskyi Districts, killing three people and wounding more than two dozen civilians. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported there were fears people could be trapped under rubble.
Air quality in Kyiv deteriorated significantly following a massive Russian military strike overnight.
In the surrounding Kyiv region, Russian forces targeted warehouses and infrastructure.
A massive Russian strike on Kyiv damaged the main Novus logistics centre and two Silpo distribution centres, killing six Silpo employees.
“This is the second strike on our logistics centre – the heart of our entire network, where the journey of products to Novus stores begins every day,” Novus said in a statement.
A strike on a railway in the Brovary District left eight people dead. The victims were waiting on a platform for a delayed train, said Vitaliy Bihun, head of the Brovary district administration.
In total, authorities have confirmed 17 people dead and 44 wounded across the Kyiv Oblast.
Head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, Tymur Tkachenko, stated that a total of 78 sites were damaged across the Kyiv region, including 13 warehouses, a manufacturing facility, four private homes, a greenhouse complex and 59 vehicles.
Russian forces also struck Odesa, Sumy and Kherson Oblasts overnight and in the morning, causing casualties, including children.
Both sides have denied deliberately targeting civilians.
Human rights organisations and Ukrainian authorities emphasise that structural economic pressure remains a key tool to halt such atrocities. They urge every nation and individual government worldwide to strictly enforce global sanctions, close existing regulatory loopholes, and completely sever remaining commercial and technological ties with the Russian Federation. Civil society groups stress that any continued cooperation by foreign businesses directly contributes to the resources Moscow uses to sustain its ongoing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Ukraine.
“Partners who are not yet ready to play a more active role in supplying interceptors can help by implementing new sanctions,” Zelenskyy said. “A significant share of Russia’s ballistic missile production is still not under sanctions. Even now. New steps are needed – from the G7, the European Union.”
The Financial Times reported that during a meeting in the Oval Office last week, Trump also declined Zelenskyy’s request for hundreds of additional Patriot interceptors, according to people familiar with the discussions. The people said Trump cited a shortage in US stocks and said they were needed to defend American assets in the Middle East and Gulf nations in the war with Iran.
Meanwhile, Reuters reported with reference to an official at Ukraine’s military intelligence agency that a North Korean missile unit has begun deploying to western Russia and could be equipped with 120 ballistic missiles and six launchers for strikes against Ukraine. Ukraine is very short of high-end air defences, and Moscow has tried to exploit this by using more ballistic missiles, which are particularly hard to shoot down.
