A missile strike on Kyiv on the night of September 1-2, 2024, damaged the Islamic Cultural Centre and its mosque. Ukraine’s military reported that its air force destroyed 22 cruise and ballistic missiles during the attack.

The mosque is located in the Nyvky district of the Ukrainian capital.

“This morning, as a result of yet another large-scale missile strike by Russian barbarians on Kyiv, significant damage was inflicted on the building of the Islamic Cultural Centre of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea,” Refat Chubarov, Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, posted on Facebook

Military chaplain Suleiman Khairullaiev, the Deputy Mufti of the Muslims of Crimea, reported that there were no casualties.

“Yet more proof that Russia is a country of absolute evil,” Chubarov commented.

Norway’s Foreign Ministry condemned Russia’s large-scale attack on Ukraine, noting that the bombardment damaged an office belonging to the Norwegian Church Aid humanitarian organisation. The ministry emphasized that “civilians are not legitimate targets”.

Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko reported that the attack hit a water treatment plant and the entrance of a metro station used as a shelter. The strike also damaged two schools and a university.

Local authorities reported that debris from destroyed missiles injured three people.

Previously, Zelenskyy called on all Ukraine’s international partners to allow it to hit targets inside Russia to prevent such attacks. His office said Moscow’s forces had fired more than 400 drones and missiles at Ukraine over the past week.

Ukrainian president explained that Russia had targeted “ordinary” people and that the strikes could have been prevented if Ukraine “had the capability to destroy Russian military aircraft at their bases”.

“This is an absolutely legitimate need. There is no rational reason to limit Ukraine’s defense,” he added.

To provide background, in March 2024 Zelenskyy spent an evening of the holy month of Ramadan with Muslim fellow citizens and soldiers. He expressed gratitude to all those working towards the liberation of Ukrainian territory, including Crimea.
