Ilmi Umerov served an indictment
Ilmi Umerov, Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis, was handed an indictment.
As reported by his daughter Aysha Umerova on her Facebook page on March 21.
“Today in the republican Prosecutor’s Office of Crimea Ilmi Umerov was handed an indictment in the criminal case”, – said Umerova
Lawyer Edem Semedliaev said that the case materials will be transferred to the Bakhchysarai court. “We will be waiting for the summons”, – he said.
In turn, Ilmi Umerov said that the defense filed two motions: one about closing the case and the other about including a linguistic examination. However, they were not attached to the case.
As a reminder, Ilmi Umerov was deprived of one of the key lawyers – Mykola Polozov.
The status of lawyer Mykola Polozov was changed from the status of the defense to the status of a witness in the case of Ilmi Umerov, Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People.
On May 12, 2016, the FSB in Crimea has filed a criminal case against Umerov under the Article 280.1. They regarded Umerov’s speech during an ATR broadcast as a call for acts that threatened the territorial integrity of the Russian Federation. Umerov himself stated that his words on the program were translated incorrectly.
On August 11, 2016, Ilmi Umerov suddenly felt faint during court hearing, where the court of the occupied Crimea considered the question of appointing him a psychiatric examination. Doctors hospitalized him with a suspicion of a heart attack. After that, Russian-controlled Kyiv District Court of Simferopol made a decision on the necessity for Umerov to undergo a stationary forensic psychiatric examination. He was transported to a psychiatric hospital on August 18.
On September 7, 2016, Ilmi Umerov was released from the hospital.
On December 30, 2016, it became known that the Russian occupation authorities included Ilmi Umerov in the list of “extremists” and blocked his financial operations in the Crimea.
