Euromadian case: the suspect who provided arms to “titushkas” Zavorotny was released
On Thursday of April 27, Rostislav Zavorotny, who is accused of in the case of supplying “titushkas” with weapons during the events of the Revolution of Dignity, was released at 12:00 pm from the Lukyanivska SIZO (pre-trial detention centre) in Kyiv.
As reported by 5 Kanal.
“The term of his detention ends today. He is not planning on running away. He will go home to his family and tomorrow in the morning he will be in the court”, – assured the defendant’s lawyer Sergey Voichenko.
Activist of the National Corps Yuriy has another opinion: “Berkut officers, who were released recently, assured, swore, cried, but they ran as soon as they had the chance. I am convinced that he will go to Russia and will receive political asylum there”.
According to the investigators, on the night of 21 February 2014, Zavorotny along with three former policemen received more than 100 Kalashnikov rifles and 50 thousand rounds of ammunition from the warehouses of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and handed the rifles to “titushkas”.
For the past three days Shevchenkivskiy District Court of Kyiv has not been able to consider the issue of electing a further preventive measure since Zavorotny’s defenders constantly petitioned for the dismissal of judges. This, according to the prosecution, deliberately delayed the case, in order to allow his client to leave the detention.
As a reminder, the day before Pavlo Dykan, lawyer of Heavenly Hundred, stated that Rostislav Zavorotny could be released from detention on the night of April 28, as the judges are dragging out the case and are shifting the responsibility on each other in order to not consider the case. Dykan reminded that once the court had already released Zavorotny, but then chose a preventive measure in the form of detention.
On April 27, the organization EuroMaidan SOS made an open appeal to the Presidential Administration the leadership of the General Prosecutor’s Office, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Council of Judges and the Supreme Council of Justice regarding justified explanations of this situation.
In the appeal, human rights defenders declare the existence in Ukraine of a well-established system for blocking the ability of those persons, who are accused of committing crimes during EuroMaidan, to responsibility and require explanations from authorities about this matter.
