Ukraine described as “partly free” in Internet freedom ranking

As noted in the report “Freedom on the Net 2015”, published by the international human rights organization Freedom House, Ukraine got score of 37 out of 100, where 0 means the best situation with the freedom on the internet, 100 – the worst. Thus, Ukraine ranks 25th out of 65 countries. The level of freedom is deteriorating the second year in a row.

The top three counties are Iceland, Estonia and Canada. The last three countries with the worst situation are Iran, Syria and China. Ukraine is behind Georgia, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan. In turn, the study showed that the situation in Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus and Uzbekistan was much worse than in Ukraine.

China has become the world’s major violator of freedom on the Internet followed by Syria and Iran.

The report stresses that most often the censorship and penalties were applied in the world for criticizing the government. The news about conflicts, corruption allegations against senior officials, the opposition websites as well as satire were subject to censorship on the internet in one third of the countries under study. In addition, the removal of content related to political, religious or social issues became more common, the number of arrests and intimidation increased.
