Russian ballistic missile strike kills three people and injured others in Sumy

A Russian ballistic missile struck civilian infrastructure in the city of Sumy on May 6, killing three people, according to Oleh Hryhorov, Head of the Sumy Oblast Military Administration and the Sumy City Council

 

The outskirts of Sumy came under attack by Russian forces at around 17:30.

“Early reports indicate that the enemy targeted civilian infrastructure with a ballistic missile. The aftermath of the Russian attack is being clarified,” Hryhorov wrote.

Kordon.Media news outlet reported that a child died at the scene of the strike, and that there were injured individuals as well. Later, the Sumy City Council clarified that the deceased was not a child but a 20-year-old woman.

At 19:46, Hryhorov reported that three people were killed in the strike. 

“The Russians claimed the lives of a 6-year-old boy, a 20-year-old woman and a 41-year-old man. My sincere condolences to the families of the victims. Four children and four injured adults are now in medical institutions. Two are in extremely serious condition,” Hryhorov wrote.

In the Sumy hromada, May 7th and 8th were declared days of mourning due to a Russian ballistic missile strike.

A day earlier, Russians attacked the Bilopillia and Vorozhba hromadasі in the Sumy Oblast with various types of weapons on Monday, killing three people.

The Sumy Oblast Prosecutor’s Office reported that the Russian army personnel carried out artillery shelling and dropped guided aerial bombs on civilian and critical infrastructure of the Sumy District that day. The Prosecutor’s office blamed the Russians for using methods of warfare prohibited by international law.

A 48-year-old civilian man died, and another 34-year-old man suffered injuries in the Bilopillia hromada as a result of the attack.

Early reports indicated that two men sustained fatal injuries in the Vorozhbа hromada, and three people were wounded, including a 16-year-old boy.

On 5 May, Mykhailo Melnyk, Head of Sumy District State Administration, urged the immediate evacuation of residents of Bilopillia and Vorozhba, two settlements near the Russian border.

The Sumy Oblast Military Administration reported that Russians killed a civilian man in an attack in the village of Velyka Pysarivka on May 4. Another two were injured. That day, Russian forces launched guided aerial bombs on residential areas.

The Russians also targeted the town of Bilopillia with multiple-launch rocket systems, damaging houses, the power grid and a gas pipeline on May 4. Two women sought medical assistance.

The artillery strike has left part of the town without electricity.
