Public organizations were not allowed to conduct mass pro-Ukrainian procession in honor of the 201th birthday of Taras Shevchenko on March 9th because of the threat of terror attacks.

This decision was made by the Conciliation Commission of the Kharkiv City Council, writes Ukrinform.

“Hromadska Varta (Civic Guard), Right Sector, Euromaidan-Kharkiv, AutoMaidan-Kharkiv, and Ultras FC Metalist filed applications for the procession. According to the applications, at noon the rally was supposed to start near the Shevchenko monument, and at 1.30 p.m. the protesters column intended to march through the main Sumska Street to Constitution Square. The Conciliation Commission did not allow the march, referring to a police warning about the danger of terror attacks,” noted the mayor’s office.

The City Council intends to ask the court to limit the activities “for the part of the procession” and notes that if the court bans the march, but the participants still gather, the authorities and law enforcement will do everything possible for people’s safety.

As reported by the news portal INSIDER, Igor Rainin, the head of the Kharkiv Regional State Administration, is considering banning all mass actions in the region after the terror attack near the Palace of Sports on February 22nd.

On February 22nd in Kharkiv, there was an explosion which killed a Euromaidan activist and police lieutenant colonel, injured 11 people, and two teenagers later died in hospital from wounds. The remote-controlled explosive device detonated when a procession of Kharkiv activists started to move from the Palace of Sports in the direction of the Freedom Square. Kharkiv Euromaidan activists gathered to commemorate the anniversary of the events of February 22nd and to honor the fallen heroes of the Heavenly Hundred, as well as those who died in the ATO.
