EU praises yesterday’s vote on constitutional amendments

The European Union has praised the fact that the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine preliminarily approved the bill on the constitutional amendments related to judiciary.

This is an important step towards strengthening the judiciary, improving its efficiency, safeguarding its independence and impartiality, and combating corruption, reads the statement of the press secretaries of the European External Action Service, Radio Liberty reports.

The EU looks forward to the swift adoption of these amendments in final reading, the EU’s diplomatic service notes.

Reforming the judiciary in line with European standards is a long-standing commitment, which will contribute to the consolidation of the rule of law and which is a key condition for the success of ongoing political and economic reforms in Ukraine. This is of fundamental importance for the Ukrainian people,” reads the statement.

As reported, the Parliament of Ukraine yesterday preliminarily approved the draft amendments to the Constitution related to judiciary (No. 3524). The decision was supported by 244 MPs out of 356 lawmakers registered in the session hall.

The day before, the Constitutional Court of Ukraine ruled that the revised draft law on the constitutional amendments related to judiciary complied with the relevant provisions of Article 157 and 158 of the Fundamental Law.
