Russia kills 5, wounds 22 in overnight attacks across Ukraine (updated)
Western regions, including Lviv, as well as the Cherkasy and Chernihiv oblasts, came under attack, with four people killed and two wounded in Lviv. Additionally, Russian forces struck Zaporizhzhia with guided aerial bombs, killing one person and wounding 10 others.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russia launched more than 50 missiles and around 500 attack drones against Ukraine on the night of October 4-5, targeting Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Zaporizhzhia, Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Kherson, Odesa, and Kirovohrad oblasts. Ukraine’s Air Force reported intercepting 478 targets, but eight missiles and 57 attack drones hit their targets across 20 locations.
According to the Militarnyi news outlet, during the Russian missile and drone strike, at least three Chinese reconnaissance SAR satellites flew over western Ukraine, the main target of the attack. In particular, the satellites of the Yaogan 33 series — Yaogan 33, Yaogan 33-03, and Yaogan 33-04 — were recorded over the Lviv region. Together, they made nine passes over the area between midnight and about 11:30 a.m. At around 6 a.m., the optical Yaogan 34 reconnaissance satellite also entered Ukrainian airspace. It is expected to make seven orbits over the region on October 5.

Photo published by Andriy SadovyyThe Lviv Oblast Military Administration and State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES) reported that Russia killed four people in Lviv oblast in a combined attack involving drones and cruise missiles.
The Lviv Oblast Prosecutor’s Office stated that four members of one family were killed in the village of Lapaivka after Russia struck the Lviv region. Another relative is receiving medical treatment in the hospital.
At the site of the destroyed house, Halyna, a relative of the deceased, said the direct hit claimed the lives of her mother’s sister, the aunt’s husband, the couple’s daughter-in-law, and the 15-year-old daughter. Rescuers found the bodies of the latter two severely damaged. Halyna said her relatives were “allegedly torn apart,” according to the Kyiv24 TV channel.
“I don’t know what to say. It’s just a horror. That a state can be treated this way in the 21st century. And the world watches. Maybe they are waiting for a missile to hit them, and then they’ll take notice,” Halyna said.
According to law enforcement, two residents from neighboring houses were also hospitalized. Three other victims received assistance on site.
Law enforcement initiated a criminal proceeding into the incident under Part 2, Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which pertains to the violation of the laws and customs of war resulting in death.
According to Sadovyy, part of Lviv was left without electricity following the attack, affecting districts such as Riasne and Levandivka. Several fires broke out in Lviv after the shelling, including one at the Sparrow industrial park. Authorities initially reported no casualties there.
Desiree Becker, a German Bundestag member from Die Linke party, witnessed the massive shelling of Lviv by the Russian army. The German lawmaker stated in a comment to Deutsche Welle that the shelling compelled her and other members of the European delegation to shelter in the basement of their hotel, located in the city center, from approximately 3:50 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. local time. She noted that their hotel was not the target, but the sounds of drones and missiles being intercepted were clearly audible.
Becker told the AFP news agency that this experience does not lead me to the conclusion that we need even more bombs and missiles, but a cease-fire as quickly as possible.
Desiree BeckerThe Russian military launched a combined attack on Zaporizhzhia overnight, using drones and guided aerial bombs (KABs). Authorities identified at least 10 hits on the city.
One person was killed and at least 10 others were wounded in the attack. SES psychologists provided assistance to eight people, including one child.

“The explosions caused fires in the private sector, burning residential buildings, as well as in a multi-story building where the structure and two passenger cars were damaged,” the State Emergency Service stated.
In addition, the Donetsk Oblast Prosecutor’s Office reported that six civilians, including a minor, were injured in a Russian strike on an apartment building in the city of Sloviansk in the Donetsk oblast on the evening of October 4.
At 10:40 p.m., Russian forces dropped FAB-250 bombs equipped with UMPKі kits on the city, hitting an apartment building.
Two women aged 60 and 70, three men aged 31, 41, and 57, and a teenage boy were injured in their homes. They suffered blast injuries, bruises, lacerations, contusions, and a fracture.
At least 26 residential buildings, over 20 cars, and the facades of shops and cafes were damaged in this city.
More than 67,000 customers in Zaporizhzhia and over 6,000 in the Zaporizhzhia district were left without power in the morning following the attack, according to the Oblast Military Administration.
Power outages were also reported in the Cherkasy region. The head of the Oblast Military Administration said that damaged power lines caused by a downed drone in the Cherkasy district left some customers without electricity.
The press service of the Ministry of Energy confirmed that a significant part of Zaporizhzhia and the Zaporizhzhia district were left without power following a Russian attack on the night of October 5. The situation remains difficult in the Sumy and Chernihiv regions.
“The combined strike damaged equipment at Zaporizhzhiaoblenergo JSC, causing a significant number of outages in the regional center and the Zaporizhzhia district,” the ministry said in a statement.
Emergency restoration work is currently underway.
Russians also attacked an infrastructure facility in the Chernihiv Oblast, where rescuers are working at the impact sites to clear the debris.
According to Dmytro Bryzhynskyy, head of the Chernihiv City Military Administration, a Russian drone hit a gas station in the city of Chernihiv on October 5.

This follows attacks by Russian forces on the Chernihiv region on the night of October 4, which included the regional capital and targeted energy facilities.
The Russian occupiers also attacked the Dnipropetrovsk region, where at least one person was wounded.
ZMINA also reported that one person was killed and seven others were wounded in the Donetsk region following Russian attacks on October 4. Russians also wounded eight people in the Sumy region, eight others in the Kherson region, and five residents in the Kharkiv region.
Commenting on Moscow’s latest attacks on Ukraine, Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has said that Russia’s recent attacks are an attempt to disguise its failed summer offensive.
“Russia is masking its failed summer offensive with terror attacks on Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure. We keep supporting Ukraine as long as needed: finalizing the next sanctions package, ensuring financing, and providing weapons. Russia will not stop until forced to,” she wrote on X.
Previously, Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Serhii Kyslytsia, in an interview with The Guardian, said that Europe must “take seriously” the existential threat posed by Russia.
Kyslytsia expects Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin to “escalate and keep escalating” without a decisive response from Europe and the United States.
Kyslytsia ascertained that the Kremlin is already at war with Europe. He said that the recent incursions of Russian drones into several EU countries were well-calculated and were an attempt to “move the red lines”.
“I’m sure Putin gets emotional if not physical satisfaction, humiliating the West by showing what he perceives as his super-strength,” Kyslytsia said.
He added that the Kremlin leader’s reckless actions risk provoking hostility from the White House, which appears to have cooled towards him.
