Verkhovna Rada asks international organizations to protect Crimean Tatars

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has adopted the resolution calling the world’s leading organizations to commemorate the victims of the genocide of the Crimean Tatar people and to condemn violation of the rights and freedoms of the Crimean Tatar people by the Russian Federation today.

240 MPs voted for the resolution, Ukrayinska Pravda (Ukrainian Truth) online newspaper reports.

Before the vote, Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Refat Chubarov delivered a speech from the rostrum.

The document provides for an appeal to the United Nations, the European Parliament, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, the world leaders and all members of the international community.

The document stresses that Russia continues to wage the armed aggression against Ukraine, continues to occupy Crimea and Donbas, violates the rights of the Crimean Tatars, as well as other people in Crimea who does not agree with occupation of the peninsula.

The Parliament of Ukraine also calls on the international community to assist in bringing to account all those responsible for the illegal occupation and annexation of Crimea and systemic and widespread human rights abuses in this temporarily occupied territory.
