President submits draft constitutional amendments regarding justice to Parliament

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko submitted the draft law on the amendments to the Constitution of Ukraine regarding justice to the Parliament of Ukraine.

This was reported by the press service of the President.

The Constitutional Commission of Ukraine approved the draft on October 30, 2015. November 9, the National Council of Reforms recommended that President submitted the reforms to the Parliament and that the Parliament considered the draft in the first reading within the current session.

The President asked the MPs to study carefully the document and consider it in the shortest possible time in accordance with the procedure. The President expects to get the amendments before winter.

The President’s press service notes that the changes should improve the constitutional basis of justice to exercise the rule of law and guarantee the right to fair trial by independent and impartial court within reasonable time.

The adoption of the bill will contribute to implementation of the judicial reform, renewal of the judiciary in line with the European standards, restoration of public confidence in the judiciary, and proper functioning of the prosecutor’s offices, the advocacy and the system of execution of judgments,” the press service said.

As a reminder, expert of the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union Arkadiy Bushchenko stated that judges of the higher courts should be dismissed and given the opportunity to resign or to work in the courts of lower instance.
