Russia killed at least 24 civilians, including three children, in Kyiv and injured dozens more civilians across various regions in a massive wave of missile and drone strikes (updated)
As a result of Russian shelling on the night of May 14, 2026, consequences including fatalities, dozens of civilian casualties, and widespread destruction have been reported in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, Odesa, Poltava, and Donetsk regions, according to the oblasts’ military administrations and the State Emergency Service (SES).
Rescuers searched for people under the rubble of an apartment building in Kyiv, which partially collapsed in the Russian attacksUkrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said it was an “especially difficult night for Kyiv,” where rescuers are searching through the rubble of a residential building after a combined missile and drone attack on Kyiv. A search and rescue operation began early on May 14 to look for people under the rubble of a nine-story apartment block, which had been hit overnight.
According to Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klychko, who visited the building in the Darnytskyi District, 18 apartments had been destroyed. He also said the attack had disrupted the city’s water supply. At least 46 people have been injured, including two children, the Kyiv mayor stated. Some 31 of those are being treated in the hospital.
President Volodomyr Zelenskyy said dozens had been rescued from the building so far, while damage had also been done to other residential buildings, a school, a veterinary clinic, and other infrastructure.
“Emergency response operations are currently ongoing in the Obolonskyi, Darnytskyi, and Holosiivskyi Districts,” Pavlo Petrov, spokesperson for the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Kyiv, told the national joint 24/7 newscast.
Update: As of 12:00 on 14 May, four people are known to have been killed and forty injured, including a one-month-old baby, in a Russian combined missile and drone attack on Kyiv. Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs has reported that 20 people are still missing.
Update: At about 1:00 p.m., Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, reported that the death toll in Kyiv had risen to five.
Update: As of 2:45 p.m., the death toll has risen to 7 in Kyiv, according to Pavlo Petrov.
Update: The SES and the SES of Kyiv reported that as of 7:51 p.m., the death toll from the Russian strike on Kyiv has risen to 12, including two children.
Search-and-rescue operations in the Darnytskyi District are continuing. Psychologists, three State Emergency Service dog-handling teams, and a total of 170 rescue workers and 51 pieces of equipment are working at the scene.
Update: At 10:30 p.m., the SES reported that the death toll had risen to 13.
Update: As of 1:21 a.m. on April 15, the SES reported that in total, Russians killed at least 21 people, including 3 children, in the Russian attack on Kyiv.
Update: Ukrainian President said in his evening address that Moscow struck a residential building in Kyiv with a Kh-101 missile manufactured in the second quarter of this year.

“This means Russia is still importing the components, resources, and equipment necessary for missile production in circumvention of global sanctions. Stopping Russia’s sanctions evasion schemes must be a genuine priority for all our partners. We are preparing steps that can intensify our joint counteraction – sanctions must be more painful for Russia,” Zelenskyy said.
The President added that over two days of what was effectively a continuous air attack, the Russians deployed more than 1,500 drones and 56 missiles of various types.
Russian shelling of Ukraine on May 13 – 14, 2026Oleksandr Prokudin, head of the Kherson Oblast Military Administration and the Kherson Oblast Military Administration reported that Russian forces carried out several drone strikes on Kherson at 10:00 a.m. on May 14, killing one woman and injuring another man in the Korabelnyi District and a woman in the Dniprovskyi District.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin for the “barbaric attack”, which he said showed Moscow was pursuing “aggression and terror” over peace. He also noted that the attack had occurred during a crucial summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, and urged the two leaders to exert pressure on Russia.
“I am certain that the leaders of the United States and China have enough leverage over Moscow to tell Putin to finally end the war,” he said.
Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is also initiating a United Nations Security Council meeting in response to the Russian air attack on Kyiv and the Kyiv region.
President Zelenskyy said that the PURL initiative needs new steps now, at the turn of spring and summer.
“I am grateful to all our partners in Europe who have begun forming an anti-ballistic coalition. This is truly the strongest solution – for Europe to have its own sufficient production of air defence systems and missiles for them, specifically against ballistic threats. Europe already has the potential to counter other challenges, and it is being scaled up, but on ballistic missile defence, all of us in Europe need significantly greater cooperation – and a different pace: the pace of implementing our agreements,” he said.
