Levonky psychiatric hospital finally falls under prosecutor’s office supervision

The Chernihiv prosecutor’s office opened criminal proceedings against officials of the Levonky psychiatric hospital, who tortured the patients instead of helping them.

This is reported by the press service of the Chernihiv prosecutor’s office.

The criminal proceedings were opened under Part 1, Article 367 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (neglect of official duty) concerning the improper performance of duties to ensure proper residence of the patients in the hospital by the officials of the Levonky psychiatric hospital.

The reason for opening the proceedings was the revealed violations of providing psychiatric care, sanitary and epidemiological and health and protection order of residence of the patients, including the failure to provide them with minimum level of hygiene, failure to provide timely and quality medical care, and the human rights violations on involving in the labor,” reads the statement.

The pre-trial investigation is carried out by the special department of the Ukraine’s Interior Ministry department in Chernihiv region.

As a reminder, the patients of the Levonky psychiatric hospital were forced to use the street toilet without doors, to work free of charge at the farm. Some patients have not been leaving the premises for six years. The patients with bedsores were neglected and had wet under pads instead of diapers.

Earlier, the Chernihiv prosecutor’s office stated in response to the letter from the representative of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights that the coercive measures in the Levonky psychiatric hospital had not been used and directed the appeal to the local Health Ministry department.
