Videos about the LGBT Community Presented in Kyiv
On May 18th a presentation of videos produced by activists and human rights advocates on the subject of the problems faced by the LGBT community was made in Kyiv.
Short videos talk about discrimination, the stigmatization of LGBT people, stereotypes and prejudices, pain, and the sturdy determination to defend the right to life. The organizers are hoping to talk about a considerable part of society that is forced to live a secretive life in clear language.
The head of the public organization Insight, Olena Shevchenko, says: “We believe that societal transformation will occur through information campaigns. Short videos are a clear and accessible format to talk about important issues. For example, about how a transgender person has been kicked out of their home. Or, how someone was fired because of their sexual orientation. Of course, no one would write that in an employment record book, the employer will always find a bunch of other reasons to justify why they were fired. This is often because of prejudice in the minds of employers.“
The Head of the Human Rights Information Center, Tetiana Pechonchyk, noted during the presentation that discrimination against the LGBT community, as well as other segments of the population, begins with not knowing what discrimination actually is and its relation with social inequality. “The information campaign of the Coalition Against Discrimination, “Discrimination Limits. Counteract!” aims to teach society how to be informed and therefore be armed,” said Pechonchyk.
The videos will soon be available on Youtube. One of them can be viewed here.
