The conference “Human Rights in Ukraine: the Baseline”

The conference: “Human Rights in Ukraine: the Baseline” dedicated to the presentation and discussion of the findings of the Ukrainian Human Rights Baseline Study, conducted by the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation and the Human Rights Information Centre under initiative of the Secretariat of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsperson) and under support of the UNDP Ukraine will take place on 5-6 July 2017 in Kyiv, Radisson Blu Hotel, Yaroslaviv Val Str. 22.

Registration starts at 9:30 on 5 July (as per Agenda).

The overall goal of the research was to study the perceptions, ideas and knowledge of fundamental human rights and basic freedoms in Ukrainian society at large, and within dedicated target groups (judges, police, civil servants, teachers, journalists and human rights defenders) by conducting national and targeted surveys. These surveys covered more than 2000 respondents overall Ukraine and 100-200 representatives of different target groups

What are the most valuable rights for Ukrainian population? What do they do to protect their rights? Are they ready to give up some of their rights for the sake of welfare? What has the main priority for Ukrainians: dignity, justice, equality, security, order, morality? If there are any changes of situation regarding human rights in recent years after Euromaidan? Whether human rights violations are frequent in Ukraine and who is the “leader” in violating human rights? What is the level of tolerance of Ukrainian population and how discrimination problem is assessed? How the conflict impacted the values of Ukrainians? Is it possible according to the opinion poll to apply tortures to “separatists” and “terrorists”? What is attitude to lynching and extraordinary forms of protest? What should be an approach to study human rights at school? Do Ukrainian judges feel themselves independent? What is journalists’ assessment of the level of freedom and problem of censorship in Ukraine?

Ruben Madsen, Ambassador of Denmark to Ukraine, Georgia and Armenia, Ms. Blerta Cela, Deputy UNDP Country Director in Ukraine, Ms. Valentina Simonenko, the Head of the Council of Judges of Ukraine, Mr. Konstyantyn Bushuev, Deputy Head of the National Police of Ukraine, Ms. Tetiana Pechonchyk, Head of the Human Rights Information Centre, Ms. Iryna Bekeshkina, Director of the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation (DIF), Mr. Volodymyr Yavorskiy, expert of the Human Rights Information Centre, Ms. Oleksandra Matviychuk, Head of The Centre for Civil Liberties, Mr. Oleksandr Pavlichenko, deputy Head of Kharkiv Human Rights Protection Group, Ms. Iryna Fedorovych, co-coordinator of the Coalition for Combating Discrimination in Ukraine, Mr. Serhiy Burov, the Head of Educational Human Rights House Chernihiv, Mr. Victor Pushkar, Social psychologist, PhD in psychology, other experts and public officials.
