Russian strikes kill 14 civilians across seven Ukrainian regions, police report
As a result of Russian military shelling over the course of 9 September 2026, 14 civilians were killed, and at least 102 others were injured across Kyiv and the Sumy, Kherson, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, and Donetsk Regions (Oblasts), with casualties also reported in the Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipropetrovsk Oblasts, the National Police reported.
The victims of Russian strikes on 9 September were:
- a woman in Kyiv;
- two people at a checkpoint on the border with Moldova in the Odesa Oblast;
- five people in the Sumy Oblast;
- two people in the Kherson Oblast;
- a police officer, two women, and a man in Mykolaiv;
- one person in the Donetsk Oblast.
In the Sumy Oblast, an additional 24 civilians were injured due to Russian shelling, and 19 victims were reported in the Mykolaiv Oblast.
In the Kharkiv Oblast, the day passed with 18 people injured as a result of Russian shelling.
In the Kherson Oblast, 13 civilians were injured in Russian strikes, and ten more in the Donetsk Oblast. Eight people were injured due to Russian strikes on the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast; three adults and a teenager were injured in Kyiv, and three people were injured in each of the Zaporizhzhia and Kyiv Oblasts.
To provide background, on 8 September, the Russian military killed 16 civilians in Ukraine.
Ukrainian experts point out that countries, including China, Greece, North Korea, India, Hungary, Slovakia, Iran, and Brazil, assist Moscow in killing Ukrainians in its war against Ukraine by funding the Russian budget through trade.
Human rights organisations and Ukrainian authorities emphasise that structural economic pressure remains a key tool to halt such atrocities. They urge every nation and individual government worldwide to strictly enforce global sanctions, close existing regulatory loopholes, and completely sever remaining commercial and technological ties with the Russian Federation. Civil society groups stress that any continued cooperation by foreign businesses directly contributes to the resources Moscow uses to sustain its ongoing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Ukraine.
