PEN Ukraine hosts talk “What Ukrainians and Black Americans Can Tell Each Other”
On October 16 at 19:00, the conversation “What Ukrainians and Black Americans Can Tell Each Other” with the participation of Terrell Jermaine Starr, Christopher Atwood, and Volodymyr Yermolenko will be held at PEN Ukraine Space.

What do Ukrainians and Black Americans share in terms of historical and cultural experience? Can we compare serfdom and slavery or draw parallels between our colonial traumas and ways to struggle for dignity? What role do culture, identity, and language play in overcoming these legacies?
The speakers will explore the issues of collective memory, aspirations for freedom, and the sense of solidarity among communities that have experienced systematic oppression.
Speakers:
- Terrell Jermaine Starr – independent American journalist, founder and host of Black Diplomats, a weekly documentary news show about civilian life in Ukraine. During his 16-year career as a journalist, he has widely covered topics such as the U.S. Army, nuclear weapons, and the Black Lives Matter movement, among others.
- Christopher Atwood – expert in human rights, communications, and journalism, head of Advisory Board of the Souspilnist Foundation in Kyiv, advisor to the president of PEN Ukraine.
- Volodymyr Yermolenko – philosopher, writer, president of PEN Ukraine, chief editor of the UkraineWorld, co-founder and host of the Kult: Podcast.
