President signs law on State Bureau of Investigation
President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has signed the law on the State Bureau of Investigation directly during his press conference.
“The Verkhovna Rada passed the law on the State Bureau of Investigation. Despite the fact that I have some comments about this process, the law on the State Bureau of Investigation has been submitted for my signature, and I sign this law,” he said, answering a question about the dismissal of Prosecutor General of Ukraine Viktor Shokin, Radio Liberty reports.
Poroshenko noted that “the prosecutor’s office will not perform the functions of investigation and will be limited to the representation of the state interests in the court only.”
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine passed the law on the State Bureau of Investigation in November last year. According to the law, the President shall appoint the director of the Bureau upon the recommendation of the Prime Minister after selection of the competition committee.
According to the law, the State Bureau of Investigation is the central executive body to carry out the law enforcement activities to prevent, detect, deter and solve the crimes falling within its jurisdiction.
