Samopomich faction: Passed constitutional amendments will allow establishing control over judicial system
The new version of the Constitution, adopted by the Verkhovna Rada today, may become a tool to establish control over the judicial system.
This is said in the statement of the Samopomich Party faction, which abstained from voting for the new version.
“We had discussion in the faction and we came to the conclusion that it is not about the quality legal norms and regulations. It is about the fact that people, who serve the oligarchs and have virtually destroyed this state, will get a tool that, on one hand, would allow to dismiss judges, and, on the other, can be used to establish control over the judicial system,” MP Oleh Bereziuk explained.
The lawmakers explained that, despite some positive norms of the bill, the document contains a lot of high-risk aspects. In particular, it stipulates not transparent and monopolized procedure for appointing judges, the monopoly of barristers on the right to represent people in the courts, a three-year delay of the ratification of the Rome Statute, unclear wording saying ‘the prosecutor’s office shall organize the work of the investigation’.”
The MPs demand to continue discussion about the judicial reform.
