Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has urged allies to tighten sanctions and export controls following the discovery of newly manufactured Western components in a North Korean missile shot down in Ukraine.

A Top Ukrainian diplomat expressed outrage after the examination of a North Korean KN-23/24 missile, downed in Ukraine. It revealed numerous recently manufactured Western-made components.

“Outrageous. A recent examination of a North Korean KN-23/24 missile shot down in Ukraine found numerous recently produced Western-made components. Putin and Kim still have access to them,” Sybiha wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The Foreign Minister urged allies to respond decisively by tightening sanctions, increasing control over export, and strengthening Ukraine’s air defence systems.

In a related development, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy  reported that Russian forces launched over 20 missiles, 800 guided aerial bombs, and 500 strike drones against Ukraine between October 14-20, 2024.

“A world united in defense can stand up to this deliberate terror. Ukraine needs more air defense systems and long-range capabilities. I am grateful to all partners who understand this and support us,” Zelenskyy stated on Facebook.

The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission reports September 2024 saw the highest civilian casualty rate this year, with 208 deaths and 1,220 injuries.

As reported, the number of civilian casualties has been increasing since July, and September recorded the highest number of deaths and injuries in 2024.

The vast majority of civilian casualties (92%) and damage to educational and medical institutions (96%) in September occurred in territories under Ukrainian control.

The attacks also targeted energy infrastructure, with 30 facilities damaged or destroyed – 25 in Ukrainian-controlled areas and five in Russian-occupied territories.
