Turkish military shoot down Russian warplane
The Turkish armed forces shot down a Russian warplane that had violated the airspace of the country on the border with Syria.
This is reported by The New York Times.
The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that one of the Su-24 planes crashed in Syria, probably “due to shelling from the ground.”
The Ministry also noted that the aircraft “remained exclusively in the territory of Syria during the flight”, and added that both pilots had ejected.
In turn, Turkey stated it had not identified the nationality of the aircraft and had shot it down only after repeated warnings.
“The aircraft entered Turkish airspace over the town of Yaylidag, in the southeastern Hatay Province,” the statement reads. “The plane was warned 10 times in the space of five minutes before it was taken down.”
