Savchenko’s Detention Extended until September 30
The Moscow City Court has extended the detention of Nadiya Savchenko, Ukrainian pilot, MP and member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), until September 30.
This was reported from the courtroom by Verkhovna Rada MP Ivan Krulko on his Twitter page.
“Savchenko will be behind bars until the 30th of September. The basis of this decision is that she crossed the border illegally and has no housing in Russia,” wrote Krulko.
He also added that Savchenko’s lawyer, Ilya Novikov, gave the court an official document confirming that Savchenko has the status of a member of the PACE and holds the corresponding immunity.
Before the announcement of the decision, Nadiya Savchenko thanked all Ukrainians for their support and letters.
The court hearing was attended by Savchenko’s support group, which included representatives from Ukraine, the US, and Russia. A person of note who was present was Vadim Tsvetkov, a 73-year-old Russian social activist, who began a hunger strike on May 11, Savchenko’s birthday, in protest of her arrest. He has been on hunger strike for 30 days as of the writing of this article.
Nadiya Savchenko has been detained since July 2014. She is accused by Russia of complicity in murder, complicity in attempted murder, and illegal border crossing. Savchenko and her lawyers deny the charges and claim that she was kidnapped in Donbass and illegally brought into Russian territory.
