The Russian Armed Forces shelled the city of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk Oblast with artillery on September 24, 2024, killing two civilian men, according to the Donetsk Oblast Prosecutor’s Office.

The Office reported that Russian forces opened fire on Pokrovsk on September 24, 2024, at about 16:30.

“A residential area was once again at the epicentre of the explosion. According to early reports, the enemy used artillery,” the statement said.

The shelling killed two men, aged 33 and 34, who were near their home at the time of the attack.

In addition, Russian forces damaged residential buildings and cars.

A fire broke out in a mine in Donetsk Oblast due to a Russian attack, causing fatalities.

On September 22, 2024, Ukraine’s Energy Ministry reported that Russians killed two mine workers. At the moment of the shelling, there were 371 workers in the mine, and authorities later brought all of them to the surface.

Two workers were found dead after the inspection of the premises, and another civilian was taken to hospital.

The ministry noted that no combustion products entered the mine.

Over the past week, Russians launched over 900 guided aerial bombs, about 400 Shahed loitering munitions, and nearly 30 missiles of various types during their attacks targeting Ukraine, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Earlier, the President revealed that Ukraine had invited Russia to the second peace summit, but the Kremlin showed no interest in participating in the event.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that “there is no alternative” to a Russian victory in Ukraine, reiterating Russia’s unwillingness to negotiate on terms other than Ukraine’s surrender. Peskov also called NATO and the West a “collective enemy”.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova also said Russia would not participate in the second Ukrainian peace summit or any “similar summits”.

Analysts at the Institute for the Study of War pointed out that Russia is not considering any peace plans and is not interested in them. They have noted that Russia intends to use the concept of negotiations only to encourage the West to pressure Ukraine to make concessions regarding Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

To provide context, Ukraine has repeatedly called on countries worldwide to impose restrictive sanctions on the Russian Federation to compel it to comply with international law, including UN Charta.

Earlier, the Financial Times reported that JPMorgan Chase and HSBC secretly processed payments for companies in Africa that were controlled by the late Russian military leader of the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin.

Politico pointed out that Western allies bought roughly $2 billion in fuel made from Russian oil in the first half of 2024, using a sanctions loophole that enables Moscow to pay its soldiers in Ukraine.

According to Bloomberg, faced with tightened US sanctions, Russian banks and companies are turning to Kazakhstan in growing numbers to facilitate their yuan-denominated payments to China.

The human rights community in Ukraine also believes that the de-occupation of Crimea and other Ukrainian territories is necessary to stop the systematic violations of human rights committed by the Russian Federation. They are urging other countries to support Ukraine with timely and sufficient weapons and military equipment supplies towards this end.
