Russians kill police officer Oleksandr Chekhun at checkpoint in Kherson Oblast
A Russian drone attack killed Oleksandr Chekhun, a 36-year-old inspector from the patrol police response sector, while on duty at a checkpoint, according to the National Police.
Chekhun, a senior police lieutenant, sustained severe injuries and died in an ambulance en route to the hospital.
He is survived by his parents, his wife (also a police officer), and a 12-year-old daughter.
Additionally, Russian Armed Forces killed a 74-year-old civilian in the village of Oleksandrivka, Kherson Oblast, with a drone strike on July 18, 2024.
“The Russians killed an elderly resident of Oleksandrivka with a drone. The 74-year-old man sustained fatal injuries as a result of the Russian drone attack,” Oleksandr Prokudin, the head of Kherson Oblast Military Administration reported on Telegram.
Prokudin also expressed his condolences to the victim’s family.
By way of background, on June 27, Russian forces launched a drone attack on Bilozerka hromadaі , dropping explosives that injured two civilians, according to the Kherson Oblast Military Administration.
According to the Kherson Oblast Military Administration on Telegram, both suffered blast injuries and concussion. In addition, a 66-year-old man sustained a leg wound. A 71-year-old woman suffered injuries to her forearm and abdomen.
Previously, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy appealed to world leaders who are still not on board with the Global Peace Summit to join the collective effort. He called on them to show leadership in advancing real peace, not just a pause between strikes.
Zelenskyy expressed confidence that the efforts of the global majority are the best guarantee that all commitments will be fulfilled.
Earlier, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin claimed that Russia would not participate in the next Peace Summit. He called Zelenskyy’s peace formula an ultimatum and added that Russia would not take part in such summits.

President Zelenskyy announced that six additional countries and organizations have signed the Peace Summit communiqué following the Global Peace Summit in Switzerland. Among them are Barbados and the Republic of the Marshall Islands.
The Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Oleksandr Lytvynenko, stated Ukraine realises the war will end with negotiations. Therefore, it is preparing and promoting President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s peace formula.
