Russians damaged Kyiv’s main mosque in in a deadly overnight barrage
The main mosque of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Ukraine, “Umma,” was damaged during a massive Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv on the night of July 31, 2025.
The strike is part of a wider assault on the capital that, as of Thursday morning, has killed at least seven people, including a child, and wounded more than 80 others.
The Mission of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea reported that all the windows and doors in the mosque building were shattered. According to the mosque’s mufti, Murat Suleymanov, a rocket landed just 50 meters from the structure, with falling debris causing additional destruction.
“This act of aggression is another war crime by Russia,” the Mission of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea said in a statement. “Strikes on residential buildings, religious, and cultural sites are yet another act of terror aimed at intimidating the civilian population.”
A nearby gymnasium and the office of the Congress of Muslims of Ukraine also sustained significant damage. The community is currently working to clear the debris and repair the damaged premises.
By way of background, the overnight attack on Kyiv was one of the largest in recent weeks. As of 12 p.m., authorities reported 7 fatalities and 82 injured. The aftermath of the Russian missile and drone strikes was recorded at 27 locations across four districts of Kyiv. Among the victims are at least 10 children and three police officers who were responding to a call.
A Russian missile strike on Kyiv on the night of September 1-2, 2024, also damaged the Islamic Cultural Centre and its mosque.
