Russia struck Kyiv and a number of regions: there are fatalities and injuries among civilians, along with widespread destruction
As a result of Russian military shelling on the night of January 20, 2026, in Kyiv and the Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, and Vinnytsia regions, destruction of infrastructure and, in some places, fatalities and injuries among civilians have been reported, according to the the National Police, the State Emergency Service (SES), and local oblast military administrations.

In the Kyiv Oblast, as of this morning, one fatality has been reported: a man in the Bucha District.
Kyiv was also under attack during the night; while there were no fatalities or injuries there, residential buildings were left mangled.
At least two women sustained injuries overnight in the Dnipropetrovsk region, and three more were injured in the Zaporizhzhia region. In the Vinnytsia Oblast, the Russian Federation struck energy infrastructure during the night, but no civilian casualties were reported.
Similarly, the night passed in the Odesa region with destruction but no fatalities or injuries.
Meanwhile, the President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that repelling Russia’s massive combined attack overnight cost Ukraine at least 80 million euros. He stressed during an online meeting with journalists that Ukraine’s air defense has not seen a decrease in missiles, but the enemy has seen an increase in theirs.
“For example, today’s Russian attack cost us (this is just the cost of missiles) about 80 million euros. Imagine the cost of those missiles. And every day we do everything, and I do everything, to ensure we receive the appropriate missiles and the appropriate protection for our people,” Ukrainiska Pravda news outlet quotes Zelenskyy as saying.
According to Zelenskyy, specifically, the enemy has increased its use of ballistics.
“Much more ballistics are being used by Russia. And they receive components, unfortunately, from partner countries and the private sector. Nevertheless, we need to reduce their ability to produce these missiles and this is not happening yet. Therefore, we need more missiles, more air defense,” the President emphasized.
The Head of State once again reminded that only Patriot systems can cope with ballistics. Regarding the number of “Shaheds,” Russia has similarly increased their use, although Ukraine has increased the number of interceptors and is actively utilizing mobile fire groups.
“That is, we are finding tools; we will eventually defeat the ‘Shaheds,’ we must do it… Without this, there is no way to survive. But as for ballistics, the key (the supply of ammunition for Patriot systems — Ed.) for now remains only in the hands of the United States of America,” Zelenskyy said.
On the night of January 20, Russian occupation forces launched a massive combined strike on Ukraine using 372 drones and missiles. The enemy attacked with one “Zircon” anti-ship missile, 18 “Iskander-M”/S-300 ballistic missiles, 15 Kh-101 cruise missiles, as well as 339 attack UAVs of the Shahed, Gerbera, Italmas, and other types.
Air defense neutralized 342 enemy targets. Hits by 5 missiles and 24 attack UAVs were recorded at 11 locations, and the fall of debris (from downed UAVs) was recorded at 12 locations.
