Russian overnight shelling killed and injured civilians and caused significant damage in the Odesa and Sumy regions on the night of October 9, 2025, according to Ukraine’s National Police and regional military administrations.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported shooting down 87 of the 112 drones launched by Russians.

In the Odesa region, Chornomorsk was struck and is currently without power. Five civilians were reported wounded as of the morning. Large-scale fires broke out in the region following the strikes, particularly affecting port infrastructure. “Invincibility Points”– heated centers providing basic services — are being deployed in Chornomorsk to support residents.

In the Sumy region, three people were killed in Russian strikes late on October 8, local authorities reported. The victims included a 40-year-old man in the Mykolaiv hromada — a local administrative area encompassing several nearby settlements — a 65-year-old man in Velyka Pysarivka, and a 66-year-old man in Bilopillia.

Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukraine’s national railway operator, reported that specialists are rerouting trains due to the damage. Explosions were also reported in Zaporizhzhia overnight, though no casualties have been confirmed.

This comes amid reports that this year, Russia plans to cause large-scale blackouts in Ukraine before the heating season and halt the railway, which is why Russian forces are deliberately striking energy infrastructure and Ukrzaliznytsia’s assets.

Previously, ZMINA reported that Russian shelling on October 7 killed three people and wounded 31 others across the Kherson, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, and Chernihiv Oblasts.
