The Parliament of Ukraine passed the bill, co-authored by Nadiya Savchenko, as a whole. According to the bill, in case of conviction, one day, spent by a defendant in the remand prison, will equal two days in prison.

As the Ukrayinska Pravda (Ukrainian Truth) online newspaper reports, the draft amendment to the Criminal Code of Ukraine was supported by 255 MPs and it was considered under the simplified procedure.

This is the first bill, submitted by MP from the Batkivshchyna faction Nadiya Savchenko, who is been currently held in the Russian remand prison.

The bill was presented by its co-author, Ivan Krulko. He said that the defendants could not be in custody until sentencing on the same grounds as the convicts.

Other MPs pointed out that the bill was aimed at the humanization of legislation.

They noted that the prosecutors and judges often abuse their right to detain a person in custody, and the suspects have to stay 5-6 years in remand prison without a judgment or even court proceedings.

The law also provides for liability for abuse, the authors noted.

However, MP Lev Pidlisetsky from the Samopomich faction supposes that now “the murderers will stay in prison less.”

As a reminder, according to the Justice Ministry of Ukraine, 68,000 people now stay in Ukrainian prisons and custodial facilities.
