Slovenia rejects same-sex marriage in referendum
The bill defining the marriage as a union between two consenting adults was put to a referendum.
The majority of citizens, nearly two-thirds, voted against the bill, according to the National LGBT portal of Ukraine with reference to the BBC.
In March 2015, the Parliament of Slovenia passed the bill that defines marriage as a union between two consenting adults.
However, it was challenged by the Conservatives, who opposed to allowing same-sex couples to adopt children.
“This result presents a victory for our children,” said Ales Primc from the group Children Are At Stake.
Earlier, Pope Francis called on the mainly Catholic country to “back the family as the structural reference point for the life of society“.
As executive director of the all-Ukrainian Charitable Foundation “Fulcrum” Bohdan Hloba noted, the representatives of the LGBT community have never been against the traditional family as they themselves were born in such families. They just advocate the right to the family for all. Hloba said that the referendum results showed why the majority could not decide on the rights and freedoms for the minorities.
“If the fate of the rights of the minorities was decided on the referendums, there still would be the slavery for African Americans in the US, the women in Europe would not have the right to vote in elections, and the death penalty (as well as the Inquisition) would not be canceled,” Hloba said.
As a reminder, if the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights, obliging Italy to legalize the same-sex unions, enters into force, it will also apply to Ukraine.
