UNICEF: 19% of Donbas residents might stay on mined area

More than 19% of adults and children from eastern Ukraine have stayed or lived in the area which could be mined.

This is said in the UNICEF study on mines in eastern of Ukraine, Radio Liberty reports.

As the UNICEF experts say, 13% of children in Donbas have seen a mine or unexploded ordnance. At the same time, every sixth girl and every tenth boy aged 6-11 years do not know how to behave when seeing these things.

As UNICEF Representative in Ukraine Giovanna Barberis said, more than 500,000 children and adults living in the east of the country have received information materials on mine safety management

Over half a million victims of the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine are children. They are also the most vulnerable group as they do not know how unexploded ordnance look like. More than 19% of adults and children from the east have stayed in the area, which could have been mined. We have prepared special educational material – comics, posters, manuals, video tapes to spread them across eastern Ukraine,” Barberis said in Kyiv.

The information and educational materials are designed for children and adults, the UNICEF Representative added.

International Day of Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action is marked worldwide o April 4.
