GPU detained former Berkut officer, who persecuted Automaidan activists

On January 24, the Department of Special Investigations of the General Prosecutor’s Office of Ukraine detained the former Berkut officers, who has been wanted for a long time on suspicion of illegal detention of 18 Automaidan activists in the night from January 22 to 23, 2014, use of violence against them and damaging their cars.

According to the press service, the detained is also suspected of forgery of a report and providing false testimony, combined with the persecution of activists on charges of serious crimes, based on which they were detained, prosecuted and arrested.

Detained is suspected of p. 2 Art 28, p. 3 Art 365, p. 1 Art 366, p. 2 Art 384 of the Criminal Code of the Ukraine. The GPU has requested the court to apply the preventive measure of in the form of detention to the former Berkut officer.

As noted in the GPU, the pre-trial investigation is continuing. The evidence are being collected and inspected for admissibility and sufficiency of proof for the possibility of criminal prosecution of other accomplices in the commission of these crimes (employees of the internal affairs agencies, prosecutors and judges) and on other episodes of criminal activity.
