Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office finds person who helped Berkut officers escape after Maidan protests
The Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine (PGO) has established the identity of a person who helped the majority of the Berkut riot police force officers to escape after the Revolution of Dignity in Kyiv and hide the weapons of disbanded Berkut force.
Serhiy Horbatiuk, the head of the Special Investigations Department at the PGO said this at a briefing on Monday, Interfax-Ukraine news agency reports.
“We have established the identity of a person, who helped to hide the weapons removed from the regiment of the Berkut riot police force and facilitated the escape of Berkut officers from Kyiv,” he said.
Horbatiuk informed that a notice of suspicion was served against this person on Monday under the article “concealment of the crime.”
He added that the person had not worked in the state authorities during the Revolution of Dignity.
Horbatiuk added that a pre-trial restriction to be imposed on this person was being chosen now.
The head of the Special Investigations Department at the PGO noted that the mentioned person “organized those actions”, not carried out them personally.
He reminded that 26 Berkut officers were suspected of killings in the Kyiv city centre on February 20, 2014. Five of them were arrested, the trial is ongoing. At least 20 Berkut officers escaped.
