Two Russian strikes in Ukraine’s central Dnipropetrovsk region have killed at least nine people, including two children, local officials and BBC News report.

Besides the apartment block, two infrastructure facilities in Dnipro were damaged. Four houses were partially destroyed in the town of Synelnykove, and eight more were damaged. A facility in the town of Pavlohrad was also hit.

Officials said a girl of 14 is among five people killed when private homes were targeted by Russian strikes on the town of Synelnykove. A six-year-old boy is in a critical condition and several other people were wounded, Dnipropetrovsk regional head Serhiy Lysak said.

Another two people were killed in the regional capital, Dnipro, when the train station and a five-storey building were hit. More than 30 people were injured in Friday’s attack in the region.

Rail operator Ukrzaliznytsia said a woman who was on duty at the time was killed and seven other railway workers were hurt.

Rescue services were continuing to search the rubble and warned that the number of victims would rise, the ministry added. A maternity hospital was also hit.

Earlier this week, the northern city of Chernihiv was struck in Russia’s deadliest attack for some time, leaving 18 dead and dozens wounded. Three Iskander cruise missiles hit residential buildings close to the centre of the city, the regional leader said.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made a speech at a Ukraine-NATO council and asked partners to supply Ukraine with the armament it needs as soon as possible.

“We are telling this directly – to defend, we need seven more ‘Patriots’ or similar air defence systems, and it’s a minimum number. They can save many lives and really change the situation. You have such systems. Please. Secondly: we are talking for quite a while about a million artillery shells for Ukraine. They must be finally delivered to the frontline,” he said.

Zelenskyy also insists that Ukraine must receive long-range weapons and aircraft. He informed the members of the council about the aftermath of the 19 April Russian strikes on Ukraine and that as he was getting ready for the meeting, the Russians struck the Pivdennyi (South) sea port.

For months, a US military aid package worth $60.8bn has been blocked by Republican representatives in Congress. However, the Republican leader of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, has said he is determined to bring the matter to a vote, which could take place as early as Saturday.
