About 500 people lodge lawsuits with ECHR on Crimea, Donbas
About 500 questionnaires on violations of the right of citizens in Crimea and Donbas have been filled in and soon will be submitted to the European Court of Human Rights.
President’s Commissioner for the European Court of Human Rights Borys Babyn said this in an interview with the Ukrayinska Pravda (Ukrainian Truth) media outlet.
According to him, many people do not want to lodge lawsuits with the European Court of Human Rights for a number of reasons. Someone worries about his relatives remaining in the occupied territories, someone is afraid of revenge of the Russian agents. Therefore, the other mechanism was elaborated.
“You do not file an individual lawsuit. Indeed, you will not get compensation in pecuniary equivalent. However, you can inform us about the violation of your rights, which took place. We attach the information to the interstate lawsuit and lodge it with the Court. This will have the consequences,” Babyn says.
About 500 questionnaires on human rights violations in Crimea and Donbas have been already filled in.
The expert says that the Court will take into account even anonymous questionnaires, “If we see a set of questionnaires, and people from different places or different sources tell us about the same violations, it will be very strong evidence for the court, even if the questionnaires are anonymous.”
